Gabler Applauds Bennett Branch Clean-Up, Saturday Trout Stocking

DUBOIS – State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) is among area sportsmen praising local officials for the hard work that has resulted in Saturday’s 11:30 a.m. trout stocking on Bennett Branch. Saturday, April 13, marks the opening day of trout season in most of Pennsylvania, including Clearfield and Elk counties.

“As someone who enjoys and appreciates the beauty and the recreational opportunities available around us, I am proud to have played a small part in a big win for Clearfield and Elk County sportsmen, as well as tourism in our region,” said Gabler, a member of the House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee. “I had the pleasure of working with the Bennett Branch and Toby Creek watershed associations, both of which deserve to be recognized for the time and effort they have put into this project.”

The areas above and below the Hollywood acid mine drainage treatment plant will be stocked with approximately 1,000 trout. This event is taking place due in part to the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP’s) successful Hollywood acid mine drainage treatment plant, which covers 41 acres.

“DEP managed to treat 21 separate discharges from four abandoned deep mines in the area in less than a year,” added Gabler. “The return on investment made in this plant will be the resident sportsmen and sportswomen who will stay close to home and fish this area, and their counterparts from neighboring counties who will have yet another reason to come to our part of the state, both as anglers and tourists.”

The Potter County Anglers’ Club will handle the stocking as part of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s Cooperative Nursery Program. Questions about this or any legislative topic may be directed to Gabler’s DuBois office at (814) 375-4688, or his St. Mary’s office at (814) 781-6301.
