Legislation Preventing Taxpayer-Funded Abortions Supported by Gabler

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) joined a majority of his House colleagues Tuesday in backing legislation to ensure that health insurance policies offering coverage for elective abortions will not be offered by taxpayer-funded exchanges set up under the Federal Affordable Care Act, often referred to as ObamaCare. House Bill 818, which received bipartisan support, now moves to the state Senate for consideration.

“This is a vote for the many Pennsylvania taxpayers who have told me they do not want their tax dollars funding or facilitating abortions in any way,” Gabler said.

House Bill 818 adopts an opt-out provision allowed by federal law enabling states to ensure that taxpayer-funded insurance exchanges set up under the Affordable Care Act do not include the sale of insurance policies that cover elective abortions. The bill would ensure that current state law remains in effect prohibiting government funds from subsidizing abortions, except in cases of rape, incest and life-threatening circumstances for the mother, as deemed by the attending physician.

Questions about this or any other legislation should be directed to Gabler’s DuBois office at (814) 375-4688 or his St. Marys office at (814) 781-6301.
