Gabler Ready to Advance Responsible Budget Priorities
HARRISBURG – Newly appointed as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, state Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Clearfield/Elk) issued a statement detailing his initial reaction to today’s budget address by Gov. Tom Wolf for the 2019-20 fiscal year:

"Today, Gov. Wolf presented a plan for our state that deserves careful consideration and analysis. While I applaud the governor’s congenial tone and willingness to build consensus, I recognize that our hard work truly begins today. This Monday, Feb. 11, I will join my fellow House Appropriations Committee members to begin our formal, detailed examination of the governor’s proposals. I’m looking forward to that challenge and that solemn responsibility.

"I have serious concerns with the aspects of the governor’s plan that rely on increased debt that will be shouldered by our children and grandchildren to support increases in near-term spending. While the governor highlighted his request for no new taxes, we know his proposed spending increase is reliant on borrowing against a new energy tax that would negatively impact our local economy and the revenue streams that benefit local communities. The governor also now proposes to access special funds in what amounts to one-time transfers, a practice he ridiculed in the past.

"The governor’s budget plan includes many worthwhile proposals and new ideas. Determining their fiscal viability is why we hold the upcoming series of Appropriations Committee hearings. As someone who has always been committed to sustainable fiscal stewardship since taking office, I look forward to doing my part to advance responsible solutions and priorities over the next several months."
